Special Project to Commemorate the United Nations’ 60th Anniversary
University Students to discuss the United Nations on 1 July at Expo 2005 Aichi

Press Release 05-051-E 2005.06.23

“It is OUR United Nations, let us think it together”-‘In Larger Freedom’

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan presented his report ‘In Larger Freedom: Towards Development, Security and Human Rights for All’ in March 2005. He urged world leaders to take global actions in order to reshape the United Nations so that it can better focus on the issues of development, security and human rights. The proposals in the report provide springboard for world leaders to make determination on these issues at the Summit which will take place in New York this September.

Japan, however, seems to focus too much on the reform of the United Nations, the issue of enlargement of the United Nations Security Council in particular. It is time for us to readjust our attention by using the above-mentioned report, so that we could embrace global issues more comprehensively. United Nations Information Centre (Tokyo) and the United Nations Pavilion of Expo 2005 Aichi call on the young generation to play a central role in the debate on what Japan should aim for in our globalizing world.
