SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS KAORU NEMOTO OF JAPAN DIRECTOR, UNITED NATIONS INFORMATION CENTRE IN TOKYO

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is pleased to announce the appointment of Kaoru Nemoto as Director of the United Nations Information Centre in Tokyo, Japan.  She assumed her new duties on 28 August.

Ms. Nemoto, who is currently an independent journalist, joins the United Nations Information Centre in Tokyo with more than 26 years of experience in journalism, communication and public relations.  Her work with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) encompasses various capacities and duty stations.  She was the Deputy Head of Private Sector Fundraising in the Division of External Affairs in Geneva from October 2009 to December 2011; Head of the Sub-Office in Damak, Nepal, from February 2006 to May 2007; Senior Protection Officer in the Department of International Protection in Geneva from November 2001 to January 2004; Protection Officer in Gnjilane, Kosovo, from November 1999 to October 2001; Protection Officer in Muyinga, Burundi, from August 1998 to October 1999; and Associate Protection Officer in Ankara, Turkey, from August 1996 to July 1998.

Between UNHCR assignments, Ms. Nemoto worked from June 2007 to October 2009 as the Executive Director of the Japan Association for UNHCR and, from February 2004 to January 2006, as a Public Information Officer for the World Food Programme in Japan.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Nemoto worked as an announcer and reporter for TV Asahi, one of Japan’s largest media companies, from April 1986 to July 1994.

Ms. Nemoto, a national of Japan, is married and holds a Master of International Affairs degree from Columbia University, New York, and a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Tokyo.
